What the message means, and the fixes worth trying in order
A fatal error in Counter-Strike 1.6 is the engine giving up: it hit a condition it cannot continue from and shut itself down rather than run in a broken state. The message is deliberately blunt and rarely names the real cause, which is why the same two words cover a corrupted install, a bad custom model, a video-mode mismatch and a botched update. The useful move is to work through the causes in order of how often they are actually to blame.

If the game worked yesterday and does not today, something moved: a game update, a driver update, a new custom map or model, or a server you joined that sent you content. Working backwards from the change is faster than working forwards through a list of fixes.
The most common single cause is an update, and it is also the easiest to test. Counter-Strike 1.6 on Steam has a beta branch, and switching to it pulls a different build. Right-click the game in your Steam library, open Properties, then Betas, and select the beta option. Several players reporting the post-update crash have confirmed this as a working route back to a playable game.
Servers send you models, sprites and sounds, and a malformed one can take the engine down on load. If the crash happens when you join a specific server or load a specific map, and never otherwise, the content is the suspect rather than your install.
This is not always your fault or the server's. There is an open issue on Valve's own Half-Life tracker, number 3760, reporting a fatal error triggered by models with long file names after a game update. The map involved had run on a community server for around seven years without trouble. If your crash is a model-loading fatal error on a custom map, that is a known and unresolved engine-side problem, not something you misconfigured.
If nothing changed and the crash is constant, verify the game files through Steam so a corrupted download is ruled out. Non-Steam copies have no equivalent, which is part of why they produce more of these reports: there is no authoritative check for what a file should contain.
Video mode is the other classic. GoldSrc is old enough that its OpenGL and software renderers both hit modern drivers awkwardly, and a fatal error immediately on launch is often the engine failing to get the video mode it asked for. Launching in windowed mode or switching renderer is a quick test.
There is a point where the time spent is worth more than the install. If you have verified files, tried the beta branch, ruled out custom content and still crash, you are debugging a 2003 binary against a 2026 operating system, and that can genuinely be unwinnable on a particular machine.
At that point the question changes from how to repair this install to how to play the game today.
