The default controls are the FPS standard. Move with W, A, S and D; jump with Space; crouch with Ctrl; and walk quietly with Shift. Fire with left-click, aim/alt-fire with right-click, reload with R and switch weapons with the number keys or the mouse wheel.
Movement is a real skill in CS 1.6. Counter-strafing — tapping the opposite direction key to stop instantly — lets you shoot accurately the moment you stop, because your bullets are only precise while standing still. Learning to peek angles, hold tight crosshair placement and move between cover matters as much as raw aim.
At the start of each round you have a few seconds in the spawn zone to buy. Press B to open the buy menu, then pick a primary weapon, pistol, armour (Kevlar + helmet) and grenades. You earn money for kills, wins and objectives, and lose rounds cost you less if you save.
The staple rifles are the AK-47 (Terrorists) — a one-shot headshot kill even through armour — and the M4A1/Colt (Counter-Terrorists), which is more controllable. The AWP sniper is a one-shot body kill and dominates long sightlines. New players should master the rifles first: buy armour, hold your fire in short bursts, and learn each gun's spray pattern so you can pull your aim down to counter recoil.
Economy is a team game. If your team can't afford full buys, "eco" together — everyone saves — so you can all buy properly next round instead of trickling in with pistols.
CS 1.6's public scene is huge. The two classic objective modes are Bomb Defusal (de_ maps, where Terrorists plant the C4) and Hostage Rescue (cs_ maps, where CTs escort hostages out). Beyond those, the community runs dozens of custom modes: Deathmatch for instant-respawn aim practice, Gun Game where kills upgrade your weapon, Zombie Mod survival, Surf and Bunny Hop movement modes, Jailbreak roleplay and more.

If you're new, start on the maps everyone knows. de_dust2 is the most iconic map in the game — simple, symmetric and perfect for learning the fundamentals. de_inferno and de_nuke teach you angles and rotations. For pure aim practice with no objective, fy_iceworld and aim_map throw you straight into constant gunfights, while cs_office is the classic hostage map.
Every map has its own landing page with a description, a live server link and related maps, so you can learn the pool one map at a time and jump in whenever you want.
Crosshair placement beats reaction speed: keep your crosshair at head height and pre-aim the spot an enemy will appear, so you barely have to move to land the shot. Shoot in short, controlled bursts rather than holding the trigger — recoil climbs fast. Use sound: footsteps, reloads and bomb plants tell you where enemies are, so play with audio on.
Don't chase kills alone. CS 1.6 rewards trading — pushing with a teammate so that if you die, they get the frag. Manage your economy with your team, learn one map deeply before spreading out, and spend time in Deathmatch or an aim map to build raw mechanics. Improvement comes fast once the fundamentals click.
