The most-played CS 1.6 surf maps

Ranked by servers we actually observed, not by taste

Surf lists for Counter-Strike 1.6 tend to be written from memory. This one is counted: between 11 March and 20 July 2026 we scanned the public master list and recorded which maps were running on which servers. Sixteen surf maps turned up anywhere at all, across 69 distinct-server sightings in total, and the distribution is far more lopsided than any hand-written list suggests.

surf_ski_2 carries the scene

One map dominates. surf_ski_2 appeared on 31 distinct servers over the window, four and a half times the runner-up, surf_green, which managed 7. After that the numbers collapse: surf_sand on 6 servers, surf_iceday_final on 4, the original surf_ski on 3.

Four of the sixteen maps we saw appeared on exactly one server each. If you have ever joined a surf server and found it running surf_ski_2, that was not coincidence; it is close to being the default.

The full ranking

By distinct servers observed: surf_ski_2 (31), surf_green (7), surf_sand (6), surf_iceday_final (4), surf_ski (3), then a tail of maps on two servers apiece: surf_09_primavera, surf_advanced, surf_darck, surf_iceday_remake, surf_simpsons_final, surf_ski3_summer and surf_swift. Four more were seen on a single server each.

Player counts follow the same shape. The most we ever saw on a surf server at once was 12, on surf_ski_2. surf_iceday_final peaked at 8. Most of the tail never showed more than one or two people at a time.

What this means if you want to learn surf

Learn surf_ski_2. It is the map you will actually find running, it is the map other players know, and its ramps are gentle enough to teach the basic strafe rhythm without punishing every mistake with a fall.

surf_ski, the original, is a reasonable second stop and appears on fewer servers than its sequel. Beyond those two you are into maps that run on a handful of servers, which means learning them mostly alone.

Surf is smaller than its reputation

Sixty-nine distinct-server sightings across five months is a small scene. For comparison, the bomb-defusal maps in the same scan turn up in the hundreds of servers each, and de_dust2 alone was seen on thousands.

That is worth knowing before you go looking. Surf on Counter-Strike 1.6 today is a handful of dedicated servers rather than a section of the game, and the community that keeps it going is correspondingly small. The maps themselves are still there and still good; there are just not many places running them.

How these numbers were produced

We poll the public Counter-Strike 1.6 master list continuously and record which map each server reports. The figures above count DISTINCT servers seen running a given map between 11 March and 20 July 2026, so a server that ran surf_ski_2 every day for a month counts once, and a map that briefly appeared in a rotation still counts.

This measures where maps run, not how long people stay on them, and it can only see servers that report to the public list. Private and password-protected servers are invisible to it. Every number here describes that window and would look different if measured again.
