The M3 is a corner weapon. Inside a few metres it removes a fully armoured player in one shot; outside that, the pellets spread so wide it is barely a weapon at all.
It is at its best held on a tight chokepoint where the enemy has to come to you, and at its worst anywhere with an open sightline.
